Elche y Santa Pola
Elche is the inland counterweight, a city with a life of its own and resident families in the centre and the surrounding countryside; Santa Pola and Gran Alacant add the summer second homes. In the country houses of the Camp d'Elx, with a walled garden and palm grove, the usual role is a live-in housekeeper or a couple, with separate quarters on the plot.
Two calendars on the Costa Blanca: summer and winter
The Costa Blanca has two seasons and they have little in common. The summer one runs from Easter to October and fills the villas of Jávea, Moraira, Altea and Calpe with families: live-in staff are taken on for those months, with fixed dates and accommodation in the house itself. To have the team in place by June, April is the time to start.
The winter season gets talked about less and is just as real: from November to March, residents from northern Europe arrive in L'Albir, Altea, Dénia and Orihuela Costa, a good many of them retired. What they need is not villa service but a live-in carer who keeps them company, runs the house and is there overnight, very often with one weekend off in two.
Between the two seasons sit the closed-up houses, which in some developments are the majority. Looking after an empty house — airing it, watching for damp, checking the pool, letting technicians in and having it ready for an arrival announced two days ahead — is a different job from running a house with the family in it: the on-call time changes, the salary changes, and it is worth putting in writing before anyone starts. A long-term live-in housekeeper or a couple living on the plot is what covers it.
The staff we select for the province speak Spanish and, depending on the area, English. For German, Dutch and Norwegian families we look for candidates with fluent English, which is the language the household actually shares; if you need the exact language, we say so from the start and adjust the timescale.
