There is no airport: everything arrives by ferry from Ibiza, the season is short and intense, from June to September, and the resident population is small. The villas of Es Cap de Barbaria, La Mola, Cala Saona and Es Pujols belong to Italian, French, Swiss and Spanish families who come for a few weeks a year with guests and want to find the house open, clean and with the fridge full.
Finding staff on the island itself in July is close to impossible: hotels, restaurants and holiday lets absorb the few local candidates. That is why our work in Formentera starts months earlier. Formentera has the shortest season in the Balearics: it really starts in June, peaks in July and August and fades by the end of September. Outside those months many houses are shut, and so are many of the island's services. That is why most of the positions we fill here are seasonal, with fixed dates, accommodation at the villa and a salary that reflects the intensity of working with guests.
Logistics make the difference. With no airport, staff arrive by ferry from Ibiza and should be on the island before the family, to open the house, do the shopping and receive suppliers. When the family leaves, someone has to close up: empty the fridges, protect the outdoor furniture and leave the property ready for winter. We build those tasks into the job description from the start.
Formentera is by far the most Italian island in Spain: a large share of owners and summer visitors speak Italian, followed by French, Swiss and Spanish families. Many of the candidates we propose therefore speak Italian or English as well as Spanish, and we give priority to people who have already worked for international families.
