The Canary Islands have two kinds of client living side by side. On the one hand, the resident families of Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Las Palmas, with children, elderly parents and long working days, who want a settled live-in housekeeper — the kind who stays in the house for years.
On the other, the German, British, Nordic and other European families whose winter residence or main home is in southern Tenerife, Gran Canaria or Lanzarote. They need staff with languages, used to villas with a pool and garden, sometimes only from October to April. Added to that mix are the retired couples who spend the winter here for the climate and end up needing a qualified carer who lives with them. Each case calls for a different person: a live-in for a La Laguna family with three children is not the same job as keeping a Costa Adeje villa in order while the owners are in Hamburg.
On the islands we select live-in staff only — housekeeper, nanny, carer, domestic couple and estate caretakers — through an in-depth interview and direct reference checks with previous employers. Live-out and hourly work we don't cover here. Before we put anyone forward, three things are settled: the duties, the accommodation and the languages. We don't have an office in the Canary Islands, and the flight from the mainland is part of the job: most live-in staff and couples come from off the islands, so the shortlist is introduced from Madrid and we organise the travel, the accommodation and the start date with the family before anything is agreed.

The capital and the university town are home to the year-round resident families: professionals, civil servants and business owners who want a settled live-in housekeeper and, often, a carer who moves in with an elderly parent. The large apartments of Los Hoteles and the Rambla, and the houses with gardens in La Laguna, Tacoronte and El Sauzal, set the tone.
Costa Adeje
Southern Tenerife is where the European families who winter or live year-round in the Canaries are based: villas in La Caleta, Roque del Conde, Torviscas Alto and Abama, most with a pool and garden to keep up. Requests here are for live-in housekeepers with English or German, nannies for children at international schools and domestic couples for the house and grounds.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Ciudad Jardín, Tafira and the houses on the upper side of Las Palmas bring together long-established Canarian families and executives posted to the port and the island's companies. The usual requests are a live-in housekeeper for homes with children, a qualified elderly carer and, in the Tafira houses with grounds, a couple for the house and the garden.
Maspalomas
Meloneras, Salobre Golf and the developments between Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés hold the second homes of German, Nordic and British families who open the house from October to April. They usually need someone living at the house who looks after it while they are away and steps up the pace — cooking, guests, grandchildren — during the months they are there.
Lanzarote / Puerto Calero
Puerto Calero, Playa Blanca and the fincas around Tías and Yaiza have carefully designed houses, often with land or an orchard, whose owners look for a caretaker couple or a settled live-in housekeeper who knows the island. Corralejo and Lajares in Fuerteventura follow the same pattern, with more seasonal homes.
The season in reverse, and languages, in the Canary Islands
In the Canary Islands the season runs the other way round from mainland Spain: demand for household staff rises from October to April, when European families open their homes in southern Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote for the winter, and eases in high summer. If you need someone in place for an autumn arrival, the best time to start the search is September, so the house and the start date are settled before you land.
We work with two kinds of role. The seasonal one, five to seven months, with a live-in housekeeper or a couple who cover the family's stay and are free again in spring; and the year-round one, for resident families and for houses kept open with a live-in housekeeper who stays there while the owners are away too. In both cases the contract and the Social Security registration are done from day one, with an end date when the role is temporary.
The staff we select for the Canaries speak Spanish, English and, very often, German, the language of a large share of the winter residents in the south. When the candidate lives on another island or on the mainland, we say so from the outset and go through the move, the accommodation and the trial period with you before anything is agreed.
DOMESTIC COUPLES
Couples and domestic couples in Canary Islands
The villas of southern Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and the Lanzarote fincas with land and an orchard, are the homes that most often ask for a domestic couple in the Canaries. One person looks after the house and the cooking and the other the garden, the pool and the upkeep, with separate accommodation on the plot. It is the arrangement that works best when the family is away for months at a time and needs the house kept running.
We select couples with villa and estate experience, verified references and, when the family asks for it, English or German. We also place caretaker couples for properties that are only opened in winter.

Hiring domestic staff in Canary Islands: what you need to know
In September. High season on the islands runs from October to April, and families opening their home in southern Tenerife or Gran Canaria for the winter usually want the person in place the day they arrive. Starting a month ahead leaves time to interview, check references and sort out accommodation if the candidate is coming from another island.
Yes, that is the norm in the homes of the south. A live-in housekeeper lives at the property, with her own room and the rest periods the law sets out, and a domestic couple usually has a separate apartment or an annex on the plot. We put it in writing in the contract, together with the working hours and days off.

When a move is needed we go through it with you case by case: accommodation, trial period and start date, with no promises we cannot keep.
Only those who live at the house: live-in housekeeper, live-in nanny, live-in carer, domestic couple, estate caretakers, live-in cook and a housekeeper who runs the home, permanent or on a winter-season contract. We don't select live-out or hourly staff on the islands: our candidates almost always come from the mainland and the accommodation is part of the deal.
As a national guide, between €1,500 and €2,500 gross per month, plus the family's Social Security contributions. The figure for your role comes with the quote. On the islands, languages, the size of the villa and whether the contract is seasonal weigh heavily, because the person gives up a post on the mainland to come.
The family does, as the employer, and it is mandatory from day one, seasonal roles included, which carry an end date in the contract. We advise you on the contract and the registration and, if you prefer, our employment team handles all the paperwork for you, whether or not you are resident in Spain.
We don't have an office in the Canary Islands: we select from our head office and support you remotely, travelling when it's needed. Interviews are held by video and references are checked by phone with previous employers; you receive the candidates in your client portal and decide who to speak to.
