Recoletos, Castellana, Lista and Goya: period buildings with very large apartments and, in a good number of them, the original staff room still in use. The usual arrangement is a full-time live-out housekeeper who cooks and irons, plus a nanny for afternoons and homework.

Puerta de Hierro y Aravaca
Houses with gardens and pools inside the city boundary, between the Casa de Campo and the A-6. These properties have self-contained staff accommodation: a live-in housekeeper or a couple, plus a gardener and hourly cover on days with guests. Valdemarín, with its streets of houses among the pines, and the La Florida colony, right next to Aravaca and El Plantío, are the two addresses that come up most: two-storey homes with a basement, a lot of floor to look after and schools ten minutes away by car.
Conde de Orgaz y La Piovera
Quiet inner streets of detached houses in the north-east, close to the M-40 and the airport, with a good many foreign families on long postings. They ask for nannies and live-in housekeepers with English or French, on hours that work for two parents who travel often.
The southern end of the western belt, between the M-40 and the M-50: generous plots and two-storey houses with gardens. Families hire a live-in or full-time live-out housekeeper and often a second person by the hour for ironing and weekend cooking. Las Lomas, in Boadilla, are among the largest plots, with a pool and a guest house, and call for a couple or a live-in with a separate gardener; Monteclaro, just inside Pozuelo but entered from the Boadilla road, is a gated development of tree-lined streets where the norm is one person who stays for years.
Villanueva de la Cañada y Valdemorillo
The west where the commuter belt gives way to open country, along the M-503 and the M-600. Villanueva de la Cañada has developments of plots with pools and young families with two or three children; Valdemorillo, out towards the Valmayor reservoir, has country houses with horses, dogs and grass to cut. There is no metro, the nearest commuter station is a long way off and so is the supermarket: nearly every role here is a live-in or a couple, and a driving licence is taken as read.
Ciudalcampo y Fuente del Fresno
The large-plot developments along the A-1 corridor, with Santo Domingo and Valdelagua a little further north. They are far from public transport, so having a car is not a bonus but a requirement, and it usually tips the balance towards live-in staff or a couple rather than hourly help. A little to the west, up the M-607, Colmenar Viejo closes this arc: a town with a life of its own, developments on its edges and cattle estates out on the dehesa, where what is asked for is a caretaker couple or a live-in used to the countryside.
Torrelodones
Torrelodones, Villafranca del Castillo and the arc of developments climbing towards the sierra: houses with plenty of land, some with horses, and families who traded a flat in town for a garden. Couples, long-term live-in housekeepers and carers who sleep over are what fits here.
When Madrid hires: the school year, August and staff holidays
Madrid doesn't have a season the way the coast does: demand runs all year and roles are permanent. What it does have is a hiring calendar. Most placements start in September with the school year, and in January; there is a second wave in May and June, when families want the summer settled before the city empties out.
August is the month worth planning for. Many families leave for the coast or the mountains and their housekeeper travels with them, with holidays and rest days agreed in writing; others stay and need cover for exactly those weeks, because their housekeeper is off or visiting her own country. Tell us in June and there is plenty of room; tell us in the last week of July and there is far less.
On languages: Spanish is enough in most Madrid households, while in much of Chamartín, Conde de Orgaz and La Moraleja we are asked for real working English — enough to talk to the children and keep up with an international school. We select from our Madrid office, which is where we interview, so the final interview with the family happens in person, at your home.

In Madrid a domestic couple comes into the picture when the house has a garden and two floors: La Moraleja, Ciudalcampo, Somosaguas, Puerta de Hierro or the developments climbing towards the sierra. Duties are usually split with the interior, laundry and cooking on one side and the garden, pool, upkeep and car on the other, with separate quarters on the plot or a self-contained floor of the house.
